Preventing Overeating
( Health Life Outlook & Related Choices Research )

You always want what you can't have, and if you've ever eliminated breads and starchy carbs from your diet entirely, you're familiar with thoughts of mashed potatoes crowding into your head. University of Toronto at Mississauga (Canada) researchers found that severe carbohydrate restriction produces overeating of carbohydrates.

Duh, you say? Consider this: Participants in the study that appears in the July 2006 issue of Appetite were divided into three groups: carb-restrictors, protein-restrictors and a control group. After a three-day restriction period, only the carb-restrictors pigged out on their no-no food while the protein-resinctors did not, even though they also craved their food of constraint.

The take'away: "frying to cut a favorite food out of your diet is likely to result in overeating that food eventually," says Janet Polivy, PhD, a study author and professor of psychology "'frying to lose weight by avoiding one's favorite foods doesn't work.' And if you didn't know that by now, here's the science to prove it.
